Pearl River Resort
The Pearl River Resort located in Choctaw, Mississippi, is operated by the Choctaw tribe.
The Choctaw
In prehistoric times, the Choctaw were farmers in what is now southeastern Mississippi. They are linked by similar language and similar culture to the Chickasaw, who lived in northern Mississippi. During the early years of European contact, the Choctaw allied themselves with the French against the English, and later with the Americans against a number of other tribes, notably the Creeks.
However, as American settlements encroached on their lands, the Choctaw either sold or were forced from their ancient homelands. By the 1830s, most were forcibly removed to Indian territory in what is now Oklahoma. Only a few remained in the tribal lands in Mississippi.
