Chip-In's Island Resort & Casino

Chip-In's Island Resort & Casino is on Michigan's northern peninsula, just a few miles from Lake Michigan. The casino is operated by the Hannahville Indian Community.

History

The Hannahville Indian Community was founded in the 1830s by Peter and Hannah Marksman, who were Methodist missionaries. When the Indian Removal Act of 1830 called for tribe members to be relocated to Kansas, an number of native Americans, many of whom were members of the Potawatomi Nation, stayed at the community in northern Michigan. The Hannahville Indian Community received official recognition as a tribe by the federal government in 1913.

By the 1940s, there were 134 members living on 3,400 acres of land. Existence was sometimes tenuous during the mid-20th century; the community did not receive electricity until 1966. Paved roads did not come to the community until the late 1970s.

For years, the people of the community had been holding bingo games on the community's baseball field as a way to raise money for the local baseball team. Players sat in their cars to play. In 1981, the community opened a bingo hall. A small casino followed in 1985. The facility was later renamed the Chip-In Casino. The Resort and casino opened in new facilities in 1998. Money raised from the community's entertainment enterprises has gone to the establishment of Hannahville's Medical center, which opened in 1997.

Other amenities

The facility is also home to the Tangles Casino Salon, for expert, professional haircuts and styling for men, women and children.

There is also a spa and pool. Because even summers in northern Michigan can be cold, there is also a heated sand beach.

There are three restaurants in the complex. The Firekeepers' Restaurant has daily breakfast, lunch and dinner specials and a full-service menu. The 24-hour Coral Reef Grille offers hot dogs, hamburgers, pastries, and a soup and salad bar. For those who want to satisfy their sweet tooth, Thornbury's Creamery has freshly-made gourmet custard ice cream and fresh cinnamon-roasted candied almonds.
